Domestic violence is the most common, but least reported crime in the nation. It affects persons in all cultures, races, occupations, income levels, and ages. It is a serious and unacceptable crime that affects children and society in a multitude of ways. Domestic violence is not limited to poor, urban areas; approximately one third of all men counseled for battering are doctors, physiologists, lawyers, ministers, and business executives. Nationally, 50% of all homeless women and children are on the streets because of violence in the home.

Crime Stoppers of Northeast Michigan Domestic Violence Initiative is a program created to prevent domestic violence. The initiative plans to increase public awareness through an aggressive media advertising campaign designed to encourage citizens and victims to report domestic violence through the Crime Stoppers Anonymous Tips Program. The initiative is sponsored through resources of Crime Stoppers programs in Genesee, Saginaw, Midland, Gladwin, Iosco, Ogemaw, Alpena, Presque Isle, Montmorency, Alcona, and Bay counties.

The Crime Stoppers of Northeast Michigan Domestic Violence Initiative is a corollary of Crime Stoppers, and occurs as the Crime Stoppers programs are being revitalized. The intent is to protect local citizens, whether they are spouses, parents, children, or others, from aggressors.
